By far the most popular in Sardinia is the Cannanau. It is produced all over but originally it is from the East coast. Of the 41 grape varieties planted in Sardinia, the Cannonau di Sardegna DOC represents the largest vineyard area, at a little more than a quarter of all plantings.
It is normally aged for a year in oak or chestnut barrels. With its intense flavour, ruby red colour, and warm soft taste it is excellent drunk with roast, game, and red meats. Great alongside a basic pasta sauce as well.
Other potential candidates are Cannaaus from the Sella di Mosca vineyards of Alghero. Alternatively, the ancient town of Orgosolo has a 'Luna Vona'. Also, 'Tani, Donosu'. Incredible hints of strawberry. Most of the Cananau is around 14%. A rare exception is a lighter 12.5% 'Antichi Podere Jerzu, Bantu', a medium ruby wine and defo left of field when it comes to this type of wine.
Renowned for some of the highest tanning in any red wine it's frequently a very bold taste and trying to get a smooth Cannanau with that boldness is difficult.
If you really want to try a really authentic good cannanau try Mamuthone. Expect to pay around 16-20 euro but, good stuff
